Coughing is a vital part of our well being. We all need to do this now and then to clear our throats and nasal passages of debris.

There are two main types: productive and nonproductive. Productive tends to sound loose and wet, with mucus. Nonproductive is dry and hacky with no mucus.
Below, is a list of home remedies and herbal treatments with ingredients commonly found in your kitchen cupboard. Why go pay for high priced cough treatments when you can easily prepare these at home for a fraction of the cost and know they are made with natural ingredients.
Home Remedies:
  • Onions- Take one onion and chop up fine. Extract the juice and mix with one tablespoon of honey. Let sit four to five hours and take as a cough syrup. Take one teaspoon twice daily.
  • This is one of the oldest home remedies for cough.
  • Grapes- Act as an expectorant. Try one cup of grape juice mixed with a teaspoon of honey.
  • Make a Hot Toddy- My grandmother always swore by this. When she felt a tickle coming on she would mix a tablespoon of brandy or whiskey with a teaspoon of honey. For adults only. Never give to a child.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar- This is a great home remedy for cough and congestion. One tablespoon apple cider vinegar, ¼ teaspoon ground ginger, ¼ teaspoon red cayenne pepper, 1 tablespoon of honey, 2 tablespoon of water. Mix and take one teaspoon 2-3 times day.
  • Many of us grew up using Vicks vopor rub. I still use it to this day. Try rubbing Vicks on the bottom of your feet and then apply socks. Before you know it, you'll be able to rest through the night.
  • This is one of the easiest home remedies for cough. It works! Herbal Remedies:
  • Ginger- Take one inch of fresh ginger root, ½ of fresh lemon, sliced with peeling, one clove garlic mashed, 2c water, tablespoon of honey.Place water, ginger, lemon and garlic in pan and bring to a boil. Let simmer for 20 minutes and strain. Add honey to taste.
  • Turmeric- Has antiseptic properties. It is very useful with a constant dry tickle in throat. To use, the root should be roasted and turned into a powder. Use half teaspoon in warm milk or favorite drink. Take am and pm.
  • Echinacea- This has antiviral and antibacterial properties that are useful in shortening the duration of illness and preventing infection. You can use capsules or tea with Echinacea.
